SBIFF’s 2021 MIKE’S FIELDTRIP TO THE MOVIES

This past year, we highlighted three of the year’s Oscar-nominated films: Disney/Pixar’s SOUL, Netflix’s OVER THE MOON and Apple TV+’s WOLFWALKERS.

In order to reach all Santa Barbara County 3rd-6th grade classrooms, we pre-recorded talks with members of the filmmaking team from each film, so these educational videos may be used in the classroom at any time

“Soul” Directing and Producing Lesson

About this Lesson:
Students will be introduced to the roles of a director and a producer and the process of creating a film from start to finish.

About “Soul”:
What is it that makes you…YOU? Pixar Animation Studios’ film SOUL introduces Joe Gardner – a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22, who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions.

“Soul” Cinematography Lesson

Students will be introduced to the role of a cinematographer in the filmmaking process, storytelling through camera placement, movement and composition as well as the importance and placement of lighting in film.

“Over the Moon” Voice Acting Lesson

Students will be introduced to the role of a voice actor in an animated film, the process of voice acting as well as creating and voicing a character.

“Over the Moon” CGI & Animation Lesson

About this Lesson:
Students will be introduced to the role of a CG Supervisor in the filmmaking process and the technical approach and process of achieving the desired look for “Over the Moon.” Students will also learn about the aspects of designing the world and objects in the film.

“Wolfwalkers” Directing Lesson

About this Lesson:
Students will be introduced to the role of a director in the filmmaking process as well as the process of directing, writing and animating a feature film.

About “Wolfwalkers”
In a time of superstition and magic, when wolves are seen as demonic and nature an evil to be tamed, a young apprentice hunter comes to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last pack. But when she saves a wild native girl, their friendship leads her to discover the world of the Wolfwalkers and transform her into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.
