Santa Barbara Filmmaker Screening Series

SBIFF’s Santa Barbara Filmmaker Screenings Series occurs in conjunction with Downtown Santa Barbara’s monthly 1st Thursday. Stop by SBIFF’s Education Center at 1330 State Street between 5:00pm and 7:30pm, enjoy popcorn, wine and a short film from a Santa Barbara Filmmaker. Every month we will highlight a different filmmaker’s film, showing every 30 minutes starting at 5:30pm through 7:30pm.

The inaugural event in June celebrated our dear friend Russ Spencer who championed Santa Barbara Filmmakers. His heart-warming short doc A MAN’S PLACE is set in Willie’s Barbershop on Figueroa Street but is really about complicated father-son relationships.

August will be featuring Casey McGarry and Chris Price’s film CASCARÓN. The film shows a brief look into the lives of four Hispanic families in Santa Barbara who carry on the folk art tradition of making cascarones (confetti eggs) for Fiesta.

September will be featuring Justin Gunn’s CRUISIN’ SANTA BARBARA. The film shows us how Santa Barbara plays host to a large community of beach cruiser enthusiasts with a rich history and a bespoke style unique to this seaside community.

October will be featuring Dani Rodriguez’s TRAIL HEADS. The film shows us how after the Thomas Fire and subsequent mudslides, two opposing mountain biking and hiking communities came together to rebuild common ground.

November will be featuring Karen Kasaba’s THE GARDEN IS SINGING: GANNA WALSKA LOTUSLAND. The film portrays an intricate, never-before-seen portrait of the garden and its creators; an immersive experience designed to demonstrate Lotusland’s significance as a world-class public botanic garden – culturally, historically, aesthetically, and scientifically.
